Gergely Samu awarded the Polányi Mihály Youth Prize and the Academic Youth Prize

Gergely Samu, a research fellow of the Ultrafast Dynamics Group at ELI ALPS and assistant professor at the Faculty of Science and Informatics of the University of Szeged, received the Academic Youth Prize in March and the Polányi Mihály (Michael Polanyi) Youth Prize in June. We have interviewed him on this occasion.

On 22 May, the ELI Industrial Liaison Officer (ILO) Network gathered at the ELI facility in Szeged, Hungary, to deepen cooperation between European research infrastructures and industry. This was the second meeting of the ILO Network.

Csongor Nagy, a year three physics student and colleague of ours has come third in the Optics and Laser Science section of the National Conference of Scientific Students’ Associations (OTDK) with his paper titled Time-resolved ellipsometry measurements of surface plasmons. On 16 May, ELI ALPS’ Day of Light event attracted hundreds of visitors to the institute. This year, quantum science was in the focus, as the UN General Assembly declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology on the occasion that the development of the field kicked off 100 years ago, with discoveries published in 1925. Our programmes on 16 May – the International Day of Light – will also showcase the achievements of quantum science.

Enikő Szűcs, a senior student at Tömörkény István Secondary Grammar School in Szeged, is a frequent guest at our research institute. She has routinely attended our open days and events organized for students in the past years and has recently written an article about ELI ALPS in the journal titled A Természet Világa.

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we invited year 8 to 12 secondary school students to a Girly Afternoon. The event was attended by thirty-five young ladies from our region and beyond; girls living as far as Debrecen were also interested in the work being done here.

Researchers of ELI ALPS are also involved in the EuPRAXIA electron acceleration project

The EuPRAXIA Consortium has recently selected ELI Beamlines, the Czech facility of ELI ERIC, as the site for the planned laser-driven plasma-based electron accelerator. The aim is to pioneer compact, high-performance electron accelerators using advanced laser- and beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration technology.

The Extreme Light Infrastructure (ELI) is pleased to announce the launch of the 6th ELI User Call, with submissions open until 25th April. Researchers from around the world are encouraged to submit proposals, which will be evaluated by an international peer-review panel based on scientific excellence.

Science and Art – Zsolt Dobóczky wins another prize for his ELI photos

For his photos taken at ELI ALPS, Zsolt Dobóczky has received a special award in the recent media competition organized by the Szeged Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The photographer, who is also a full-time teacher of electrotechnics, has been honoured with several prizes for his images of the research institute.

Blood loss measurement with laser technology

Physicists regularly come to the aid of physicians with devices built for medical purposes. This time, a laser-based instrument developed at the University of Szeged was proposed for measuring blood loss and tested at the recent blood donation event organized at ELI ALPS Laser Research Institute.

Rearrangement under the undulating monolayer

Researchers at ELI ALPS evaporated gold onto rhodium and prepared a boron nitride monolayer on the alloy. The noble metal atoms were then found to reorganize themselves under the monolayer. The impressive result was published in 2D Materials and Applications, one of the Nature publications.
