According to the epidemiological plan and the public health emergency protocol of the University of Szeged, Szent-Györgyi Albert Health Centre must release a total of 1,093 beds for the care of coronavirus patients, including 364 beds with ventilation support. To achieve this goal, Prof. Dr. Gábor Szabó, managing director of ELI-ALPS, offered two halls of the building complex, where infected patients can be treated if the epidemiological situation so requires.
Due to the basic mission and the strict safety regulations of ELI-ALPS, the 1,400 square metre hall is perfectly suited for providing care for infected patients, as special filtering devices can create negative air pressure, thus preventing the virus from escaping the building. A total of 118 beds have been placed in the halls, which have also been fitted with an oxygen supply system. These “hospital rooms” would only be used for patients in critical condition who would be treated here as long as they need intensive ventilation.
The operation of the makeshift epidemiological unit also requires supplementary facilities where healthcare workers can disinfect themselves and change clothes. To this end, the University of Szeged is building a complex of nearly twenty containers in the immediate vicinity of the Research Institute.
